A logistics team builds a carrier integration. It works perfectly in testing. Three weeks after shipping to production, one customer's account triggers a form the integration has never seen: the carrier presents a different confirmation screen for accounts on enterprise billing. 1. Two kinds of edge cases, and why the distinction matters

When developers talk about handling edge cases and branching logic, they usually mean error handling: timeouts, auth failures, rate limits, 5xx responses, malformed payloads. Modern tools handle this class of problem well. Retry logic, exponential backoff, and circuit breakers are solved problems in 2026.

The second class is different. Account-state variation means the platform you're integrating with presents genuinely different UI paths, form states, or data structures depending on account tier, plan type, region, account age, or which features are enabled on that account. The branching isn't in your code; it's in the target platform, and it's invisible until you have enough real accounts hitting production.

2. The happy-path problem in DIY integrations

The structural reason DIY integrations underprepare for account-state variation is straightforward. Developers build integrations against the platform account they have access to, which is almost always a single account representing one combination of tier, region, and account history. They test the happy path on that account. It works. They ship.

What they never see during testing:

  • Plan tier variations: free vs. paid flows often route through different endpoints entirely, not just different UI states

  • New vs. established account states: a platform's onboarding flow presents different forms and confirmation steps for accounts under 30 days old

  • Regional form differences: billing and tax fields, address formats, and payment methods vary by geography in ways that break field-mapping assumptions

  • Feature-flag states: enterprise accounts with specific add-ons enabled expose endpoints and data fields that standard accounts don't see

  • Restricted or suspended account states: a partially suspended account may return partial data sets rather than an error, which looks like success with missing records

A platform with 10,000 customers in production has more account-state combinations than any test suite will cover. That is not a testing failure; it is a structural fact about the distribution of real-world accounts.
